Thomas Interview

Chloe Dallas

UNIVERSITY, Miss-As former University of Mississippi alum John Thomas walks into a classroom he mentions his longtime friendship with professor Samir Husni, also known as Mr. Magazine, who follows him into the room. Thomas later explains to the class how Mr. Magazine's desk still looks the same as when Thomas was a student. THis set the stage for John Thomas' talk with journalism students.
He graduated from Ole Miss in 1985 finishing second in his class for the Journalism School. Thomas's experience at the University meant so much to him that he and his wife created a $100,000 scholarship for journalism majors. This includes a match from the Abbott fund, of which Thomas is president.
Thomas showed his concern for students during the interview and encourages all students to keep writing. HIs interview with a classroom of journalism students was not only filled with information about his career, but words of wisdom and advice as they begin their journey as journalists.
Abbott is the company Thomas works for as vice president for investor relations and public affairs.
"Investor relations is a key component of what we do," Thomas said.
"My sweet spot is investor relations,"Thomas said.
He plays a big part in the company's success and what his +25 years in journalism has led him to pursue his career in.
Thomas went on to express in his slide show presentation to the class about Abbott's resistance to new changes that included social media because of its traditional nature. However they were soon convinced and created a Twitter account and Facebook page that are continuously updated and available to like and follow.
"Social media is important to get word across," he said.
So many people use technology today to figure out about new businesses and up to date information about what everyone is talking about. Creating new social media accounts allows people to learn more about Abbott and get their company more aware to the public. Thomas said that he hopes Abbott is shared in a positive light, as they are open to the public view.
During his interview Thomas stressed the importance of writing in the journalism field. Something he wished he did more of in college was practice writing. He told the class that good writing still matters today even with all the new social aspects of journalism.
He also reminded students to "take opportunities when they come along and be ready to build your resume."
